Fires and Fungi at Coal Creek Preserve

On this sunny winter day, we visited Coal Creek, a 500 acre preserve, where on a clear day, you can see views of the Bay Area. Our route was one-way with a gradual 700 foot decline and then 600 foot incline, we walked by hilly grassland and and forest which provided a mixture of sun and shade. There were panoramic views of the Bay for the first half of the walk, then we crossed a bridge to see Crazy Pete’s waterfall. Along the way, we learn about fires – the causes, costs to society, and prevention methods – and searched for and learned about fungi. Before heading home, we stopped for a picnic lunch. This special program is hosted in partnership with Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District.
