Coal Creek Open Space Preserve

This preserve has about 500 acres of land and about five miles of dirt trails used by hikers, bicycles and horses.  On a clear day, one can see views of the Bay Area from the trailhead area at an elevation of 2300 feet.  The trails cover hilly grassland and lots of woods which provide a mixture of shade and sun.  There is limited paved parking at turnouts off of Skyline Blvd.  There is no drinking water, toilets or pay phone but there is an emergency call box.

Dogs must be on a leash.

Operating Hours

Preserves are open a half hour before sunrise until a half hour after sunset.

Free parking and entrance.

Disabled Access

Yes, there is street parking. Also, the pullout is paved and there are a few designated handicapped parking spots.

Coal Creek Open Space Preserve can be reached from the Caltrans vista point on Skyline Boulevard (opposite Russian Ridge Preserve gate #RR-01), approximately 1.2 miles north of Page Mill Road. Coal Creek is also accessible to hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians from Alpine Road. This roadside parking area is rarely full. The other two preserve entrances (with limited parking) are at Crazy Pete's Road, about 0.5 mile north of the vista point near the emergency call box, and at the end of Alpine Road.
