ITINERARY

Ferry Ride

This morning, we head to Angel Island State Park on the Golden Gate ferry. The boat ride affords us views of the Golden Gate and Bay bridges, the San Francisco skyline, Sausalito, Tiburon, Treasure Island and we pass by Alcatraz island. Walk Through History

We start our leisurely, educational two-mile easy-to-moderate walk on paved trails from Ayala Cove to our picnic destination (four miles roundtrip). Along the shady walk with many large trees, bay breeze and bird songs, we have views of Ayala Cove, Tiburon and Mt Tam. Views of Ayala Cove, Tiburon and Mt Tam

Our first stop is the Immigration Station where up to one million immigrants from 80 countries were processed, detained, and/or interrogated. After decades sitting abandoned and left to decay, in 2022, the historic Immigration Station Hospital opened to the public as a museum following a $12 million, 14-year restoration. We will spend time viewing the exhibits inside and outside of the hospital. Immigration Station Outdoor Exhibits, photos by Nusrat Khaleeli

The restored hospital that treated thousands of immigrant patients between 1910-1940, is filled with exhibits chronicling the immigrant experience from the early 1900's, through World War II and modern times. Next, we will visit the historic buildings of Fort McDowell including the Detention Barracks. Fort McDowell, photo by Nusrat Khaleeli

Lunch

Our picnic spot for lunch is at Fort McDowell near Quarry Beach. We will have gourmet sandwiches and a chocolate truffle. Quarry Beach, photo by Nusrat Khaleeli

Visitor Center

In the afternoon, we enjoy our return two-mile walk. We will stop for a short visit to the visitor center at Ayala Cove (the old officers' quarters) and/or sit on benches where you can watch the harbor seals and enjoy panoramic views. View of Angel Island from the Bay, photo by Nusrat Khaleeli
