ITINERARY

Sustainable Organic Farm Tour & Fruit-Vegetable Picking

This is one of my favorite tours of all BAO day trips. This morning, we head to Pajaro Valley to visit an organic family-run farm that grows a variety of berries, vegetables and flowers. The farm owner, Javier, is the son of Mexican farmers and grew his farm from 1.5 to more than 100 acres. He has been providing healthy and delectable food for his community for more than ten years. He will take us on a personal tour of his farm. Along the way, we taste and pick berries, tomatoes and more! Berry Picking, image by Anne Ferguson

Javier has an engaging personality with many inspiring stories. He will clearly explain all of his sustainable farming methods. He is a role model who has taught many local farmers how to become sustainable and is focused on building the number of Hispanic farmers in Salinas Valley. Tomato Picking, image by Anne Ferguson

Fresh & Home-cooked Lunch

For lunch we have a buffet of home cooked food including chicken, steak and fresh roasted vegetables from the farm with guacamole and tortillas. More berries and vegetables will be available for purchase after lunch. Home-cooked Lunch, image by Anne Ferguson

Pajaro Valley History

At our next stop, we will split into smaller groups for a 90-minute tour of the historic Bockius-Orr house, garden, carriage house and archive for genealogy maps. The house is an Italianate Victorian home built in 1870 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The home contains a clothing display that spans 100 years. As we tour the rooms, we will learn about four generations of family history. We will also visit the garden. Historic Bockius-Orr House

We will also tour the carriage house that was used to store buggies, wagons and other horse-drawn vehicles. It has a collection of antiques the first of which were donated by Helen Volck Tucker. Bockius-Orr House Gardens
