ITINERARY

Haas-Lilienthal House Tour

We head to San Francisco for an expert-guided tour of the Haas-Lilienthal House. This home is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is one of only 34 National Treasures in America. It was built in 1886 for William and Bertha Haas, and is an exuberant example of Queen Anne-style architecture designed by Peter R. Schmidt. Surviving the 1906 earthquake and fire, the house remained in the family until 1973 when it was entrusted to San Francisco Heritage to serve as the organization’s headquarters and as the city’s only Gilded Age house museum open to the public. We will split into two groups to learn about the history of the family, the home, and San Francisco in the late 1800's through stories and photos, as well as the architecture and interior decor. The house has an elevator so everyone can access the second floor. Haas-Lilienthal House Exterior

Japanese Lunch

We break for lunch at a local Japanese restaurant for a choice of salmon, chicken or vegetarian dishes. There are gluten-free options.

The Buena Vista Cafe's Irish Coffee, Ghiradelli Square & Hyde Street Pier

Next, we relax at the Buena Vista which has been slinging drinks for seafaring folk since 1916. In 1952, they perfected the famous Irish Coffee from Shannon, Ireland. It took aged cream, frothed to precision consistency so it would float as delicately as a swan on the perfect mix of coffee and whisky in a heat-treated goblet. Soon the fame of the Buena Vista's Irish Coffee spread throughout the country. In more recent times, the restaurant’s white-jacketed bartenders serve up to 2,000 of the frothy, whiskey concoctions daily from behind the long, mahogany bar. During this leisurely visit, you can buy your own Irish Coffee or choice of other alcoholic and non-alcoholic specialty drinks such as Mexican, Nutty Irishman, Baileys Irish Cream coffees and delectable desserts such as bread pudding, New York cheesecake and chocolate lava cake. There will also be time to walk around the neighborhood and visit Ghirardelli Square or take a leisurely walk out to Hyde Street Pier that features an outdoor exhibit on naval history and several historical ships docked in the harbor including a square-rigger, lumber schooner, ferryboat, steam tug, and the scow schooner.
