ITINERARY

Explore the Redwood Forest

Our first stop is Byrne-Milliron Forest, a 400-acre park that is a working forest—which means regular harvesting (logging) using sustainable methods, the proceeds of which they use to pay for trail building, trash collection, habitat restoration and other maintenance. We will travel along a trail of tall redwoods that has artwork integrated into the trees themselves. The art is courtesy of the park’s former steward, Jeff Helmer who passed away in November 2014. On our leisurely two-hour, three-mile roundtrip, moderate walk underneath the shady redwoods, our hike leader, an expert from Save the Redwoods, will teach us about harvesting and the park’s wildlife. Our journey includes a gradual climb on a wide trail to a panoramic spot to enjoy views of Monterey Bay, nearby redwood forests and the Santa Cruz mountain range. Mouth-watering BBQ

For lunch, we have an outdoor BBQ feast. Our caterer is a family-run business that starts with the finest quality meats, seasons them with their time tested rubs, and smokes them with California oak wood to achieve the perfect harmony of smoke and flavor. There will be vegetarian and gluten-free options. BBQ lunch

Winery Tour & Tasting

Next we travel to the Gilory Wine Trail and stop at Fortino Winery where we will learn about their wine-making history, take a brief tour and taste their award-winning wines. This winery was established in 1970 when Ernie and Marie Fortino purchased a vineyard that had been growing since the early 1930’s. Ernie was drawn to the vineyard because the surrounding land was reminiscent of his hometown, Calabria, Italy. The original vineyards were all dry-farmed and comprised of Ruby Cabernet, Cabernet, Carignan, and Grenache grapes. In 1975, he produced an exceptional Ruby Cabernet, which won Double Gold in the Los Angeles County fair and lead to an article about the winery in the New York Times. Fortino Winery has produced other award-winning wines in local, national, and international competitions including awards for their Cabernet Sauvignon, Carbono and Carignan. Fortino Winery
