Lecture 1: Synthetic biology — new frontiers in engineering life

Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at 10:00 AM

Engineers are responsible for many of mankind’s greatest feats. Now they are turning their attention to the very foundations of life on this planet and beyond. Recent breakthroughs in genomic sciences have many thinking about designing and building living systems from scratch. Luminescent trees to replace street lamps, bugs that happily eat the world’s worst pollution and greener fuels for our cars are all ideas considered to be feasible in the near future. We will discuss the science and technology that are driving these endeavors and sort through the hype, utility and ethics of this new field of science. This lecture is presented by Ryan McGuinness, a Silicon Valley–based scientist and entrepreneur with 25 years of experience in integrating biology with technology.

Lecture 9: East meets West — preventative healthcare

Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 10:00 AM

Asian medicine, including medicinal herbs, acupuncture and Qi Gong, has been used for thousands of years, but was first introduced to the United States in 1971. The focus of Chinese medicine is prevention and treatment of the underlying cause of health problems by improving normal body functioning and natural healing. Our speaker, Ann Marie Deas L.Ac. will teach us about Chinese medicine’s theory and practice, our current scientific understanding of how it works, and how it complements Western medicine.

Ann Marie holds a Master’s degree in Public Health with an emphasis in biomedical epidemiological research, and a Master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine. She has coordinated nationally–funded epidemiological research studies related to Type-1 Diabetes, antibiotic overuse, and skin cancer prevention. She has published in national research journals and was a guest speaker at national health conferences.
