Event 1: Weeknight Galaxy, Nebula and Star Cluster Viewing

2014 BAO Astronomy Event

Tuesday, January 21, 2014 from 5:30 to 8:00 PM

Come see and learn about celestial bodies like the Orion and Crab Nebulas, Pleiades, Pinwheel and Whirlpool Galaxies and the Double Star Cluster with the 16–inch computer–controlled solar telescope at Foothill College Observatory. Our host is Rick Baldridge, a senior engineer who works for companies that design and build satellites and spacecraft systems and a member of the Peninsula Astronomical Society.

Event 3: THIS EVENT IS FULL History, Culture and Tastes of Turkey

2014 BAO Turkish Event

Saturday, February 22, 2014 from Noon to 3:00 PM

Learn about Turkish culture and history through stories and pictures while enjoying a lunch of six savory Turkish dishes with Baklava and Persian tea for dessert. Free color tour and travel guides are available to take home. Hosted by the Turkish members of the STAR Rotary Club which supports Silicon Valley and Turkey communities.

Event 4: Classical Music Performance

2014 BAO Classical Music Event

Saturday, March 1, 2014 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM

Join us for a classical music performance by Outreach with Music, a group of student musicians and singers from The King’s Academy high school in Sunnyvale, California. They will perform a variety of classical and modern repertoires featuring solo and small ensemble pieces. There is time before the concert for socializing and a healthy food and after the concert to talk to the students.

Event 5: Help Save San Francisco Bay Wetlands

2014 BAO Save The Bay Event

Tuesday, April 22, 2014 from Noon to 3:00 PM

Spend the afternoon with the Save the Bay team transplanting native seedlings so they can grow big and strong and re–establish acres of wetlands. This important work supports a sustainable ecosystem for generations to come. We will work in the nursery and learn about native plants. All restoration tools and gloves, educational instruction with maps, other materials, water and granola bars will be provided.

Event 6: THIS EVENT IS FULL Migratory Bird Watching at the Charleston Slough

2014 BAO Bird Watching Event

Wednesday, May 7, 2014 from 9:30 to 11:30 AM

Take a leisurely 1.5–mile nature walk around the slough to catch views of migratory and breeding birds while learning about our wetlands, local wildlife, bird identification, adaptation, land use and more. Binoculars and bird guidebooks are loaned to you and a bird checklist is provided. Our knowledgeable leaders are from the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society.

Event 7: Origami – It’s History, Storytelling and Hands–on Model Building

2014 BAO Origami Event

Tuesday, June 17, 2014 from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM

A Japanese Paper Craft Specialist will combine history, storytelling and Japanese paper folding in this hands–on class. Origami paper and other materials are included. Take home instructions are provided for the models you build. Share your experiences during a social lunch after class.

Event 8: Crime Scene Investigation Bay Area

2014 BAO CSI Event

Thursday July 10, 2014 from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM

Are you fascinated with forensic TV shows like CSI and Dexter? Have you always wondered what it’s like to work in a REAL crime lab? This "virtual tour" of the Santa Clara County Crime Lab walks through all the different areas of the lab via photographs and stories from real cases. The presentation is given by a criminalist with over 15 years of experience who has worked on many different kinds of cases, from crime scenes to shoeprints to bloodstain patterns.

Event 9: THIS EVENT IS FULL Smart Cooking – How to Make Easy and Healthy Meals

Tuesday August 5, 2014 from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM

If you are on a budget and short on time, this hands–on class is perfect for you. Make easy, tasty meals that you can eat right away and reheat when you need it. In this class, Mariel Balderas, Culinary Center Director will show you how to prepare veggie burger patties, butternut squash mac–n–cheese and the perfect oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. End with eating the tasty creations with the rest of your classmates. Take home the recipes.

Event 10: Gourmet Chocolate Tasting Extravaganza

Thursday September 4, 2014 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM

Join us for an engaging discussion around the cacao industry, the chocolate making process and the unique and fascinating stories of chocolate makers. This is followed by a tasting of gourmet chocolates from around the world, complementary coffee, fruit and cheese, and ends with a lively question and answer session. Our host is The Chocolate Garage Founder and CEO Sunita de Tourreil.

Event 11: Papua New Guinea Sculpture Garden – the Magic and the Myths

2014 BAO Sculpture Garden Tour

Saturday October 4, 2014 from 1:00 to 2:30 PM

During the summer of 1994, 10 master carvers from the Middle Sepik River Region of Papua New Guinea worked in residence at Stanford. They created a permanent outdoor sculpture garden of wood and stone carvings of people, animals and magical beings that illustrate clan stories and creation myths. Join us for a docent–led tour of this ground–breaking exhibition and the complementary landscape of Yuccas, Dracaenas, Lion’s tail, Aloe, New Zealand Flax and large Silk Oak.

Event 12: Explore the Universe

Tuesday November 18, 2014 from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM

Take a special tour of the NASA Ames Exploration Center led by one of NASA’s Education Specialists. We begin with a presentation on their high–definition, 40–foot wide screen covering details of the Mars missions and simulated flights through the Milky Way Galaxy and beyond. See the new exhibits such as Science on a Sphere which gives you a look at the planets in the Universe with a large, spherical projection system. Check out the NASA mission data describing all we have discovered thus far about the moon, learn about the microgravity research performed at the International Space Station, and the variety of technologies, spacecraft and probes used to explore the universe.

Event 13: FREE Alive Inside Movie

Monday July 14, 2014 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM

Join us for a free viewing of the film Inside Alive that won the 2014 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award. The film chronicles the experiences of individuals around the country who have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music and reveals how music’s healing power can triumph where prescription medication falls short. Registration deadline is Thursday, July 10 and there are only 30 seats available to BAO members.
